  6. The developer documentation provided here is an alpha draft outlining the Directory Services API and providing the necessary information to begin developing for support of the Directory Services API.

  9. Directory Services API

The Directory Services API, for Mac OS 8.x and Mac OS X, provides an abstraction layer designed to isolate clients of the Directory Services API from the actual implementation of a directory system.  When client applications need directory services, they call the appropriate Directory Services function, which passes the request to the plug-in for that directory service. The plug-in obtains the requested information from its directory service and returns the information to Directory Services, which delivers the information to the client application that requested the information.
